Ottawa Rejects Toronto's Drug Decriminalization Plan Amid Safety Concerns
Addictions Minister Ya’ara Saks rejected Toronto's request to decriminalize the possession of controlled drugs, citing public safety concerns. The decision followed intense political pressure from the Opposition Conservatives and the Ontario government. Toronto's Mayor Olivia Chow and Medical Officer of Health Eileen de Villa were prepared for the denial and are now seeking other supports. Their proposal included decriminalization paired with public health measures to address the overdose crisis. Saks indicated that the plan lacked provincial support and didn't ensure public health and safety. Ontario's government, firmly opposed to decriminalization, referenced a negative outcome from a similar program in British Columbia. Toronto officials emphasized the need for collaborative efforts and increased access to treatment.
